Typically economics can be defined as how scarce resources are used to meet unlimited human wants. From this definition key questions of what to produce and who gets what flow. Economics is essentially about choice. Thus the concept of opportunity cost flows from the basic definition. This starting point is treated uncritically within A level, however a moments thought suggests that while resources are scarce, human wants may be limited. The danger here is that economics makes the pursuit of ever increasing consumption seem acceptable and perhaps even desirable. Perhaps it would be better to think more critically about human wants as we live on a finite and fragile planet.
