Newton's First Law of Motion

A body at rest remains at rest, and a body in motion remains in its current motion so long as it is not acted upon by an outside force.

This means that if something is at rest, or moving at a constant velocity, the total force acting upon it in each direction must equal zero. A force is needed to change the velocity of the object.

Newton's Second Law of Motion

The rate of change of momentum is proportional to the force and acts in the direction of the force.

F = ma where F is the force, m is the mass of the object and a is the object's acceleration.

Newton's Third Law of Motion

Every action has an equal an opposite reaction.

If object A applies a force on object B, object B also applies an equal force on object A in the opposite direction.
