Centrioles are organelles found in almost all animal cells (as well as in the cells of some algae and Fungi).

Structure

They are composed of 9 sets of 3 microtubules. Centrioles are 0.5 micrometres in length, and 0.2 micrometres in diameter.

Roles

Centrioles are primarily involved in nuclear division, in mitosis and meiosis. During nuclear division, the microtubules unwind to form spindles, which the chromatids migrate along.

They may also be involved in the formation of microtubules which form the cytoskeleton of the cell.
