Reduction to Alcohol
Aldehydes are carbonyl compounds with the functional group H-C=O Ketones are carbonyl compounds with the functional group C=O
- Aldehydes are reduced to PRIMARY ALCOHOLS e.g. ethanol
- Ketones are reduced to SECONDARY ALCOHOLS e.g. propanol
The reducing agent for both is NaBH4. The conitions required are warmth, as well as a water or ethanol solvent.
Reaction =
Ethanal + hydrogen (reduction) ---- Ethanol
C2H4O + 2[H] ---- C2H5OH
